Safety in Mobility Deserves Depth
Recently, I read a thoughtful critique of UCI’s new regulation limiting handlebar length in racing bikes. Though introduced as a safety measure, it was questioned as a form of “safety theater” — making skin-deep adjustments while ignoring deeper, systemic risks riders actually face on the road.
It’s a familiar tension across the world of mobility: rules and regulations can only go so far. Whether in high-performance racing or everyday commuting, riders still navigate risk every time they get on a bike — and that demands smarter, more forward-looking safety thinking.
Being Encouraged: Everyone’s Talking About Safety
At Eurobike 2025, I joined a panel on the new EN17860 cargo bike safety standard, which focuses on structural requirements and compliance frameworks. While the discussion was centered on regulations, what struck me most was the broader shift in tone — more stakeholders are treating safety as a shared responsibility. This is something we’re genuinely encouraged by.
If we want more people to embrace bikes, e-bikes, and other light mobility tools, safety cannot be treated as an afterthought. It must be a design priority. A regulatory conversation. A user value. A foundation of trust.
